US Embassy announces temporary closure of Abuja and Lagos offices for Christmas break

The United States Embassy has announced a temporary closure of its Abuja embassy and the Consulate General in Lagos ahead of the Christmas holidays.

The announcement was made via a post on the embassy’s official X account on December 23, 2025.

According to the notice, both diplomatic missions will be closed from Wednesday, December 24 to Friday, December 26, 2025, with normal operations scheduled to resume on Monday, December 29, 2025.

The embassy advised visa applicants and members of the public to plan their engagements accordingly during the holiday period.

The closure comes amid recent changes in US immigration policies affecting Nigerians.

Earlier in December, the United States announced new visa restrictions on Nigeria, citing concerns over screening and information-sharing processes.

The measures, which take effect on January 1, 2026, affect both immigrant and non-immigrant visa categories.

Additionally, the US has introduced stricter visa procedures, including mandatory social media checks and tighter oversight of certain work visa programmes.
