Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has come under widespread criticism after calling on the United Nations and other international bodies to investigate the abduction and rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Senate, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Jimoh Ibrahim, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, senior lawyers and the Oyo APC all rejected the proposal, arguing that the UN lacks jurisdiction over domestic security incidents.
During plenary, the Senate commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for the successful rescue operation, describing it as a major victory against terrorism while honouring personnel who died during the mission.
Akume accused Makinde of politicising a national security issue, while Ibrahim urged the governor to apologise to victims and prioritise their rehabilitation.
Legal experts also maintained that the UN Charter does not support the requested investigation.
