President Bola Tinubu has explained that his administration approved sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and better prepare them for national development.
Speaking in a statement shared on his X handle on Wednesday, the President said the reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council on Monday, fulfil his inauguration promise to create meaningful opportunities for youths and ensure they play a central role in his administration.
Tinubu noted that while the NYSC has successfully promoted national unity since its establishment in 1973, Nigeria’s current realities require a fresh approach.
He stressed that preserving the scheme’s unifying mission remains important but insisted that the country must do more to empower its growing youth population.
Describing young Nigerians as nearly 70 per cent of the population, Tinubu said they should not be seen as a burden to manage but as the engine driving the nation’s future development.
