“Social Media Lied to Me” — South African Lady Dismisses Lagos Kidnapping Fears

A South African woman has challenged popular narratives about Lagos safety after sharing her personal experience in a viral video.

Posted on X, she revealed that friends and online warnings had discouraged her from visiting Lagos, claiming she could be kidnapped.

Defying these warnings, she filmed herself walking freely in Lekki at midnight, her phone visibly showing the time.

She said, “This is Lagos at midnight… they said I shouldn’t come, that they will kidnap me… look at me walking in the street… nothing is happening.”

Her clip has triggered mixed reactions online. Some users agreed, noting Lagos’ safety is often exaggerated, while others cautioned that security concerns remain valid, particularly in other regions.

The video has ignited broader conversations about the reliability of social media narratives and the real versus perceived risks of urban life in Lagos, highlighting how firsthand experience can differ from online fears.
