The Oyo State House of Assembly has rejected calls for the state government to negotiate with bandits responsible for the abduction of teachers and students during the May 15 attack on Ahoro-Esiele and surrounding communities in Oriire Local Government Area, insisting that security operations remain the best path to securing the victims’ release.
During plenary on Wednesday, lawmakers condemned the attack, which reportedly claimed the lives of a teacher, a student and a commercial motorcyclist, while several others were abducted.
The Assembly called for intensified rescue efforts, the establishment of a permanent military base in Oriire, and stronger security measures around schools located near forests and border communities.
Lawmakers also urged the recruitment of more Amotekun personnel, improved intelligence gathering and enhanced support for security agencies.
Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin maintained that negotiating with kidnappers would strengthen criminal networks and encourage further attacks, stressing that sustained security operations and coordinated rescue missions remain the most effective response to the growing insecurity challenge.
