“Nigeria don hard, men no dey toast again” — Asaba ladies lament shift in dating culture amid economic pressure

Young women in Asaba, Delta State, have sparked online conversation after lamenting what they describe as a sharp decline in romantic advances from men in public spaces, blaming Nigeria’s worsening economy for the shift in dating culture.

In a viral video shared over the weekend, the ladies said outings that once attracted compliments and casual conversations now feel unusually quiet despite their efforts to dress up and appear attractive.

One of them complained that men no longer “toast” women as before, saying even visits to busy supermarkets yield no attention.

“We don waka the full Asaba nobody go toast you… Nigeria don hard o,” another said.

They suggested that inflation, job insecurity, and rising living costs may be affecting men’s confidence to initiate conversations that could lead to financial expectations in relationships, signaling a broader shift in social interactions and modern dating dynamics in Nigeria today across urban cities reportedly.
