“My Mum and African Parents Inspire Most of My Skit Ideas” — Taooma

Nigerian comedian and content creator Maryam Apaokagi, popularly known as Taooma, has revealed that her mother and the everyday behaviour of African parents remain the biggest inspiration behind her comedy skits.

Speaking in an interview shared by TheCable, Taooma said although she sometimes experiences creative blocks, she regularly finds fresh ideas by observing the unique habits and mannerisms of African parents, especially mothers, before adding her own creative touch.

She also disclosed that she intentionally consumes content that inspires creativity and benefits her mindset, while admitting she only recently began reading James Clear’s bestselling book, Atomic Habits.

Speaking on her popular character, Quadri, Taooma explained that the role was initially created as a temporary addition for a skit or advertisement but became a fan favourite after receiving positive reactions.

She described Quadri as representing the bold and rebellious personality often associated with young men from Ilorin, Kwara State, adding that many of her creative choices develop naturally rather than through careful planning.
