A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following a special national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
The convention, organised by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the party, took place at the group’s national secretariat in Area 10, Garki, and was attended by delegates and key stakeholders aligned with the faction.
Although Jonathan was absent from the gathering, party leaders proceeded with the ratification of his nomination and presentation of a Certificate of Return. The certificate was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker Fred Agbedi.
Party officials described the move as a significant step in preparations for the 2027 presidential race, signalling the faction’s intention to rally support around the former Nigerian leader.
The development comes amid growing political realignments and internal contestations within major political parties as consultations and strategies for the next general election continue to gather momentum across the country.
