Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has stirred nationwide debate after declaring that he would abolish indigeneship if elected president in 2027.
Speaking during an interview, Amaechi said his administration would prioritise citizenship over ethnic or regional identity, insisting that all Nigerians should be treated equally regardless of their place of origin.
He argued that the current system of indigeneship fuels division and political manipulation.According to him, Nigeria must move beyond identity politics, warning that elections should not be won through ethnic or religious sentiment.
He maintained that every citizen should be regarded first as a Nigerian before any regional classification.
The former Minister of Transportation’s comments have generated mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his unity-focused message while critics question the feasibility of abolishing indigeneship in a diverse federation.
