A Nigerian resident has sparked widespread reactions online after comparing road maintenance systems in Nigeria and Canada following a frustrating experience in Lagos.
The man said he attempted to repair a pothole on his street in Egbeda after growing tired of the damage it caused to vehicles.
According to him, he personally purchased asphalt and hired workers to fix the road, but was allegedly stopped by local youths known as “area boys,” who demanded payment before allowing the work to proceed.
He expressed shock at the situation, noting that he was repairing a public road with his own money yet still faced obstruction.
He contrasted this with his experience in Toronto, Canada, where he reportedly used an official complaint system and saw a pothole repaired within days.
His comments have since gone viral, reigniting discussions on infrastructure challenges and extortion in parts of Lagos communities.
