“I Refused ₦500,000 Burial Demand”: Man Defends Stand in Heated In-Law Dispute

A man has sparked heated debate online after refusing to pay ₦500,000 demanded by his wife’s family for the burial of his late father-in-law.

The family reportedly requested that all sons-in-law contribute an equal fixed amount, despite the deceased being survived by five biological sons.

According to the man, the demand was made during funeral arrangements, but he declined, insisting such responsibility should primarily fall on the deceased’s children.

“I told my wife I’m sorry, but it’s not my responsibility to bury her father when his own sons are alive,” he said, adding that he was willing to contribute what he could but not under a fixed obligation.

The disagreement escalated into a family conflict, with his in-laws rejecting his offer and his wife reportedly withdrawing communication.

The incident has since ignited wider discussions on cultural expectations, rising funeral costs, and financial pressure placed on in-laws in Nigerian families.
