The court instead sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6 of the charges, 20 years on count 3, and five years on count 7, all without the option of a fine.

Justice Omotosho further ordered that Kanu be kept in protective custody and directed the forfeiture of a radio transmitter he had illegally imported into Nigeria to the federal government.
