A Nigerian man has ignited online debate after insisting that his wife has no obligation to perform household chores during family gatherings.
Speaking over the weekend, he emphasised that responsibilities such as cooking, fetching water, or carrying firewood should not fall solely on her, suggesting that families could hire caterers instead.
“My wife has no obligation to help with cooking at any family gathering, whether it’s fetching water, carrying firewood, or setting up a gas cooker. If necessary, the family can hire a caterer. I am not marrying someone’s daughter only for her to be turned into a slave,” he said.
His statement has drawn both support and criticism, sparking conversations about modern Nigerian marriage dynamics.
He added that marriage should prioritise partnership, mutual respect, and shared responsibilities, challenging traditional gender expectations.
