The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest advisory organ of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, has endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was confirmed on Tuesday via a post on X by the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, who said the decision followed a unanimous position of the council.
“FLASH: The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State dr obafemi hamzat to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” he wrote.
According to the update, the position was formally declared at a meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where GAC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, spoke on behalf of members.
Gawat further disclosed that the council also made financial arrangements for Hamzat’s nomination process.
“Alhaji Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi spoke on behalf of the GAC, today at the Lagos House Marina. The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form.
“The endorsement signals growing alignment within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections,” the post added.
The latest development comes barely 24 hours after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly declared support for Hamzat as his preferred successor.
Sanwo-Olu made the remark after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed the State Executive Council and party leaders of his intention to contest the governorship seat.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest for the seat of the governorship position of the state.
“It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” the governor said.
He further described Hamzat as a loyal and experienced administrator, citing his “integrity, loyalty, commitment and support” over the years as key attributes positioning him for leadership.
With the GAC endorsement now added to growing internal support, political alignments within the Lagos APC appear to be tightening around Hamzat as the race towards the 2027 general elections gradually takes shape.
