FG Suspends Planned WAEC, NECO Registration Fee Hike for 2027 Exams

The Federal Government has suspended the planned increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), withdrawing its earlier proposal to allow for wider consultations with stakeholders.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the decision on Monday, saying the June 18, 2026 letter proposing the fee review had been officially withdrawn following public concerns and feedback.

The ministry explained that the proposed adjustment was driven by rising costs of conducting credible national examinations, including logistics, security, printing, technology deployment and quality assurance.

However, Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa directed that the proposal be suspended pending further engagement with examination bodies, state education ministries, school proprietors, parents, organised labour and other stakeholders.

The ministry assured Nigerians that no fee increase will take effect until consultations are concluded and a final decision is reached, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accessible, transparent and inclusive education policies.
