The Federal Government has reduced textbook assessment and ranking fees through the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) ahead of the implementation of the National Textbook Ranking System in September 2026.
According to NERDC, the assessment fee has been lowered from ₦2,000 to ₦1,500 per page, while the ranking fee has been reduced from ₦1 million to ₦750,000 per textbook title.
The Council said the revised charges take immediate effect and are intended to ease the financial burden on publishers and authors seeking approval for textbooks used in Nigerian schools.
It also announced that publishers who previously paid the old assessment fee would receive refunds for excess payments, with details of the process to be communicated later.
Under the new policy introduced by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, only textbooks assessed, approved and nationally ranked by NERDC will be permitted for classroom use in Nigerian schools.
