“Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook” — Adeboye sparks debate over marriage expectations

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, has ignited widespread reactions following his remarks on marriage and partner selection.

Speaking during a sermon, the cleric advised men to prioritise practical qualities such as cooking ability and hospitality when choosing a wife, warning that neglecting these traits could lead to future challenges in the home.

Adeboye stressed that beyond spiritual confirmation, character, intelligence and domestic capability remain vital considerations. According to him, marrying a woman who lacks these attributes may result in avoidable difficulties.

His comments have since generated mixed reactions across social media, with supporters defending his stance as rooted in traditional values, while critics argue that modern relationships should not be defined by rigid gender roles.

The remarks have further fuelled ongoing conversations about evolving expectations in marriage within contemporary Nigerian society.
