Sowore has been ordered remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre by the Federal High Court in Abuja over cybercrime and defamation allegations linked to a social media post describing President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”
The court ruled on Monday that the human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, will remain in custody until Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when his trial is scheduled to continue.
The charges were filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing him of cyberstalking and criminal defamation following posts made in August 2025 on X and Facebook.
Sowore had refused to delete the posts despite DSS demands, insisting on his right to free speech.
In May 2026, Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that the DSS had established a prima facie case, requiring Sowore to open his defence.
His legal team later withdrew from the case in June after a directive for daily trial hearings. The matter continues before the court as proceedings resume later this week.
