Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has sparked fresh debate after calling on women to embrace modest dressing and avoid revealing fashion.
Speaking at an interfaith gathering in Abuja, the First Lady stressed the importance of moral guidance and cultural values in shaping the behaviour of young people.
The event brought together religious leaders and community members to discuss family values, youth mentorship and national development.
Tinubu urged older women to mentor younger girls, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and encourage them to dress decently.
According to her, nudity should not be mistaken for beauty, adding that modest dressing reflects Nigerian cultural identity rather than foreign influence.
She also reminded men of their responsibility to practise self-discipline, referencing a biblical idea about controlling one’s gaze.
Her remarks have since triggered conversations online about fashion choices, cultural expectations and personal freedom in modern Nigerian society.
