Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s allegation that he bribed the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, to facilitate an impeachment plot before the 2003 elections, describing the claim as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku questioned why Obasanjo waited until Na’Abba’s death to make the allegation, arguing that the late lawmaker could no longer defend himself.

He also asked why no legal action was taken at the time if there was evidence of wrongdoing. Atiku claimed the allegation was intended to damage his reputation and favour Obasanjo’s preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He linked their longstanding disagreement to his opposition to Obasanjo’s third-term agenda and said Nigeria’s economic and security challenges deserve greater attention than political disputes dating back more than two decades.
