Nigerian media personality Dayo Adeneye, popularly known as D1, has sparked nostalgia online after recalling a time when the naira held extraordinary value against the dollar.
Speaking in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, D1 shared his experience traveling abroad years ago, when currency exchange favoured Nigerians significantly.
He revealed, “When we left, 80 Kobo was 1 Dollar. When I left Nigeria, an uncle of mine gave me 500 Naira on my way to the airport. When I got to New York, I changed that 500 Naira, it was 700 Dollars.”
D1’s remarks have ignited discussions on Nigeria’s economic decline, with netizens lamenting how past currency strength made international travel and spending more comfortable.
Many shared memories of Nigeria’s thriving industries, contrasting them with current economic hardships. The reflection underscores growing public concern about economic management and the naira’s diminishing purchasing power.
