Kris Asimonye, wife of Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma, has revealed why she chose to retain her maiden name after marriage, explaining that the decision was guided by her husband.
In a reflective Instagram post, she noted that the advice came early in their union, even if she did not immediately understand its significance.
“When I got married, my husband encouraged me not to change my last name. At the time I did not fully understand why,” Asimonye wrote.
With three children together, the couple agreed on the choice well before the public debate around name retention became prominent.
Asimonye explained that keeping her surname has helped her build a professional identity and personal brand, offering consistency across her public and private life.
Her revelation has sparked online discussions about marriage, identity, and the importance of mutual understanding between spouses.
