Lagos State authorities have launched a full investigation into the death of Nigerian socialite Elena Jessica Nkwopara, popularly known as Elena, following complications from a Brazilian Butt-Lift (BBL) procedure.
The Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) confirmed the clinic where the procedure was performed is registered but stressed this does not exempt it from scrutiny regarding patient safety.
According to Elena’s sister, Nelli, she began experiencing severe pain and swelling shortly after the February 6 surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, prompting multiple interventions, including a second procedure to remove injected fat.
She was later transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, but lack of ICU beds delayed treatment, and Elena ultimately passed away after further surgery at another hospital.
Cynosure denied responsibility, claiming Elena was referred for specialist care. The investigation will assess clinical compliance, practitioner credentials, and patient safety protocols, amid rising public concern about cosmetic surgery risks in Nigeria.
